◆High-speed rotating jet engines operate in harsh environments. The important gearbox that assists the jet engine in functioning properly. Lubricating oil must always be supplied to each mechanism and circulate smoothly. The challenge was how to efficiently remove submicron-level hard metal particles suspended in the lubricating oil. ◆Introduction Story The development project for a magnetic filter for the lubrication line of the gearbox, which is essential for jet engines, started upon receiving a development request from Rolls-Royce. After more than 10 years of extensive research and testing, it finally received certification as official equipment. And it was eventually adopted for the Trent 500 turbofan jet engine for the Airbus A340. The magnetic filter, Magnum, contributes to the safety of air travel.

Originally developed to improve the durability of F1 race engines, the magnetic filter is effective in protecting the lubrication circuit of the cold rolling line in steel mills.

By introducing "Magnum" into the line, we can significantly reduce costs such as repair expenses, parts costs, and downtime. "Magnum" was originally developed to improve the durability of F1 racing transmissions. This is a performance report from a major steel company in Malaysia with a site area of 500 acres. Here, they were troubled by the accumulation of iron contamination in the transmission lubrication circuit of the cold rolling line. Even with two existing filter systems, fine iron contaminants remained in the bearing lubrication circuit. With the introduction of Magnum, it was confirmed that a visibly large amount of iron contamination was captured in just 16 days! Following the trial of Magnum, the maintenance manager was convinced of the effectiveness of Magnum technology based on survey results showing improved oil cleanliness. From the good test results, they decided to purchase an additional seven units for other lines. Our maintenance team was relieved to be able to remove the most harmful iron dust from the line by introducing Magnum, finally putting an end to the chain of wear.

The HST allows for stepless speed changes and switching between neutral, forward, and reverse with a single lever operation. However, due to the high-pressure hydraulic lines and the structure that causes the oil flow direction to switch bi-directionally every time the work vehicle moves forward and backward, a standard circuit filter cannot be used. A device with two sets of high-pressure filter housings, each equipped with a check valve, is necessary, but there are the following challenges: - It requires a large installation space. - It incurs significantly high costs. In small systems, the only countermeasure that can be implemented is to install a strainer at the outlet of the reserve tank at best. As a result, we have been unable to find appropriate countermeasures for problems caused by fine iron-based contaminants suspended in the oil. Magnum solves these issues all at once: - It is compact, easy to install, and very inexpensive. - It can be directly connected to bi-directional lines. - There is almost no pressure loss even when it becomes full of contaminants. - Captured iron-based fine particles do not reflow downstream. - It is suitable for high-pressure lines (guaranteed pressure 6000 psi). - It captures 99.97% of iron-based contaminants at the 10um level. Quenching and descaling operations at the steel mill The issues of fine contamination such as iron and steel chips, rust, and iron oxide are caused by the quenching and scaling removal processes. Effective magnetic filters in the steel industry provide significant benefits in improving the performance of water circulation systems, cooling systems, filtration devices, filter systems, and fluid adjustments, playing a major role in improving and reducing system running costs, extending the lifespan of system components, enhancing reliability, and increasing critical uptime. Magnum is a simple and effective technology. In the "quenching" process, steel is heated for a certain period to harden it, and then rapidly cooled by immersing it in water or oil. However, an important step is that the water used causes the scale on the surface of the steel to flake off. This contaminates the fluid systems such as cooling water. The water is typically sent to a large settling tank, where larger chips settle out. However, smaller chips and contaminants are recirculated and reintroduced into the system and process. As a result, this can lead to blockages in valves, rotary couplings, pumps, and spray nozzles.
